Towards a Sociology of Management (Book).

The article focuses on the book entitled "Towards a Sociology of Management," by Geoffrey Vickers. Despite its title, this collection of articles and talks contributes very little to the sociological study of management. Most of the material has been published previously, though not in sociological journals, and is a distillation of the personal views and judgments of Sir Geoffrey Vickers on such varied topics as organizational control, automation, incentives, and mental health in industry. The author shows little awareness of the considerable sociological literature on these topics and his personal views, however sincere and intelligent, are no substitute for professionally disciplined sociological inquiry.
