Abstract
- There was a time, not so long ago, when it was held that no man was properly fitted to go out from the university as a teacher of English composition and literature without a streng wissens schaftliche drill in Germanic philology. This tyranny of the philologue was confirmed by the zeal for Teutonism that swept over colleges from Germany and set students of English to minimizing the classical and renaissance element in literature. All branches of knowledge are honorable pursuits in their proper place and these particular studies may be nobly rewarding to the special investigator.
