Abstract

A steady stream of books well illustrates the smoldering intensity of the race problem in the U.S. Every shade of opinion is usually represented, but in the list the hopelessly bitter anti-African American screed is fortunately lacking. Through these books is illustrated a serious effort by white and colored writers alike to deal in a scientific spirit with what is the least solved and the least understood of the social problems in the U.S.; to apply to it the laboratory method so warmly urged as the necessary resolvent in all matters sociological.
