This book is a fascinating collection of 18 articles by Jan Fagerberg that highlight his essential contributions to developing and establishing the field of innovation studies. However, beyond the idea of an active state that fosters innovation, there is a crucial difference in that Fagerberg places a much larger focus on the firm (rather than the state) as the innovator.
