Abstract
- This is an article about recycling in Canada and the demolition of Terminal One at Toronto's Pearson International airport. I bet there's even been the odd time, as you hauled your box of papers or bottles or pop cans to the curb, that you contemplated the possibility this was all a big sham--that the recycling trucks were simply going to dump it all into some landfill site along with all your regular household garbage. Well, in a sense, that's what's happening now at a major deconstruction site at the country's busiest airport, Toronto's Pearson International. We are talking about an amazing on-site recycling project that's taking place under the unsuspecting gaze of thousands of travellers every day. It's happening at the old Terminal One building, opened in 1964 as the airport of the future. Because of its proximity to active runways and crowded buildings, it was never a candidate for that favourite staple of TV news--the 10-second countdown to the imploding building.
