Abstract
- A previous paper [D. K. Sardar et al., J. Appl. Phys. 93(5), 2602 (2003)] has reported Judd–Ofelt (J–O) spectroscopic properties of Er<superscript>3+</superscript> in garnets Y<subscript>3</subscript>Al<subscript>5</subscript>O<subscript>12</subscript>, Y<subscript>3</subscript>(Sc<subscript>2</subscript>Ga<subscript>3</subscript>)O<subscript>12</subscript>, and Gd<subscript>3</subscript>Ga<subscript>5</subscript>O<subscript>12</subscript>. In that paper, the possible magnetic-dipole contribution to the oscillator strength, which is non-zero for the <superscript>4</superscript>I<subscript>13/2 </subscript>↔ <superscript>4</superscript>I<subscript>15/2</subscript> (1.5 μm) transition of Er<superscript>3+</superscript>, has been erroneously omitted in their J–O calculation, resulting in incorrect results of relevant spectroscopic parameters. In this Comment, we point out the error, perform correct J–O analysis, and report correct results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
