Abstract

A previous paper [D. K. Sardar et al., J. Appl. Phys. 93(5), 2602 (2003)] has reported Judd–Ofelt (J–O) spectroscopic properties of Er<superscript>3+</superscript> in garnets Y<subscript>3</subscript>Al<subscript>5</subscript>O<subscript>12</subscript>, Y<subscript>3</subscript>(Sc<subscript>2</subscript>Ga<subscript>3</subscript>)O<subscript>12</subscript>, and Gd<subscript>3</subscript>Ga<subscript>5</subscript>O<subscript>12</subscript>. In that paper, the possible magnetic-dipole contribution to the oscillator strength, which is non-zero for the <superscript>4</superscript>I<subscript>13/2 </subscript>↔ <superscript>4</superscript>I<subscript>15/2</subscript> (1.5 μm) transition of Er<superscript>3+</superscript>, has been erroneously omitted in their J–O calculation, resulting in incorrect results of relevant spectroscopic parameters.
