Abstract

Poets in the magazine "Atlantic," are Edgar Fawcett, Emma Huntington Nason, Celia Thaxter, and J.T. Trowbridge. Of these, Trowbridge's pathetic "Rachel," and Thaxter's excellent salt-sea-smelling "White Rover," will be liked, and so in another way will "Atalanta," which expresses a good but not new thought with graceful ease; the others are worthy of the "New York Ledger." C.D. Warner concludes his sketches of life in the British Provinces, coming out uncommonly strong in this last paper. T.B. Aldrich and W.M. Baker go on with their serial stories; J.G. Austin describes a convent school; J.W. De Forest writes learnedly and amusingly about the cat of ancient times; and W.W. Harney describes well an adventure, decidedly,of the thrilling variety. This last-mentioned department is a new one. Poet Perry's Turgenef seems to be very good indeed. The critic's manner and tone, as here visible, are very attractive, and to the criticism readers of Turgenef will assent.
