Abstract

Adam Szetela defends critiques of the Black Lives Matter movement by claiming epistemological insiderism as an oppressive agent that dissuades democratic exchange and emancipatory scholarship. As an approach to understanding race-based social movements in the United States, Szetela fails to acknowledge the centrality of white logic guiding his analysis. Thus, I challenge Szetela in suggesting that to claim epistemological insiderism as a mechanism by Black scholars "attack" those who disagree is a claim to the historical domination of white supremacy in sociology. As this symposium demonstrates, the usage of epistemological insiderism is an investment in protecting and reifying whiteness in social movement literature, as well as a broader disciplinary trend invested in the retrenchment of critical race and gender scholarship.
