CONRAD PER RAGAZZI NELLE RACCOLTE VALLECCHI: UN'ANALISI LINGUISTICO-TRADUTTOLOGICA.

In the Italy of the 1930s, Conrad was associated with the genre of exploration and adventure first in the Alpes editions, then, in particular, in Sonzogno's Romantica Mondiale collection, whose captivating polychrome illustrations contributed to spreading the idea of Conrad as a sea writer telling stories set in exotic lands. Although in the post-war period Bompiani editions began to improve his literary reputation, the association of Conrad with adventure fiction continued until the late 1960s. Vallecchi's collections - Avventura: Racconti di avventure (1958) and Le storie del mare (1960) edited by Piero Pieroni - still promoted this association by including Conrad in a publishing project aimed at collecting the world's best tales for young readers. Both books contain a large number of illustrations (by Leo Mattioli) and are characterised by a translation style based on appropriation and adaptation, with significant interventions on the text and on its socio-cultural elements. This discursive and translational analysis (Torop 2000) aims at categorising these interventions (key words, distribution of text, realia, deixis, poetic aspects, etc.) and interpreting their impact on the reader.
