Abstract

Every year, ASLO honors scientists for their exceptional work in advancing the fields of limnology and oceanography. I am optimistic that barriers have substantially lessened over the past decade, probably through the many demonstrations of high impact science based on data synthesis, more training and networking at places like synthesis centers and the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (GLEON), as well as stronger data and reproducibility policies from publishers and funders. Because of the range of physical, chemical and biological processes included in the work, not only was new research stimulated which reinterpreted existing isotope data and created new data toward the understanding of food webs, but the paper also stimulated further investigation into the physical and chemical sub-models that supported the food web interpretations. Data-intensive ecological research is catalyzed by open science and team science. [Extracted from the article]
