Abstract

The article reports on the impact of global technological change in the Yucatan Peninsula between 1850-1950. Throughout history, technological change has been the source of great economic and socio-cultural transformations at different scales, from the local to the global. Sociologist Stephen Hill says that the rise of a new "technological framework" functions as a double-edged sword: it is both a source of opportunity and economic change and a cause of the weakening of local economic systems.
