THE NATURE OF POETRY.

The article gives information about the book "Necessary Angel," by Wallace Stevens. The seven papers assembled here are mostly occasional pieces, composed to be understood at a hearing. For this reason they are a body of notes rather than a systematic ars poetica. Many of these cluster about Stevens' persistent, possibly central theme: the dilemma of the active imagination in a world drained of myth which the poet can elaborate.
