Abstract

The article reports that the Indian Parliament passed the Nehru bill which abridges the freedom of speech, expression and press guaranteed as fundamental rights. A severe "party whip" required each member of the India's Congress Parliamentary Party to be present, to accept Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's bill as written, to oppose every amendment moved by non-Congress members, and to vote for the government -sponsored bill. Led by Nehru, who fancies himself to be a Socialist, the Congress Party had envisaged the abolition of the feudal Zamindari (Landlord) system and nationalization of key industries. Nehru's men wrote India's constitution with this "basic structure of society" in mind.
