Men with severe obesity (BMI > 35) have been shown to have a 3-fold increase in risk of reflux symptoms compared to men of normal weight (BMI < 25). Instances in which a patient presents with complaints of reflux, regurgitation, and even vomiting may actually be secondary to dysphagia, with ejection of food retained in the esophagus.
