Abstract

It is proposed that college reading programs are established to help students adapt to college living. Following this premise, the relation of college reading programs to student personnel services is evident. Therefore, clinicians in college reading programs should use appropriate psychological and counseling techniques. The effective helping relationship in a college reading clink involves initial and continuing diagnosis since the characteristics of the helping relationship in this setting are different in certain respects from those in psychotherapy or certain other counseling situations. Nevertheless, the learning environment should be characterized by effective interpersonal relations between student and tutor. The effective student-tutor encounter will mat some of the criteria proposed by Carl Rogers and Eugene Gendlin for other helping interpersonal relationships. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
