Since its invention, the automobile has been treated in fantastic literature and films. The article analyzes how cars are dealt with in audio-visual media since the 1970s (with a focus on the 21^st century). Cars are represented either in a negative, demonic way by sexualizing them, by showing the brute force of trucks or by foregrounding ecocritical aspects like pollution and consumption, or in a positive, even funny way by anthropomorphizing them, by using cars as a kind of portal leading not only to other places but also to other times, and symbolizing mobile homes.
