Abstract

Using data generated from interviews, participant observation, and archival materials, this article introduces the foundations for token fatigue: the mental, material, and physical penalties exacted on marginalized groups working in dominant spaces. With the case of contemporary Western classical music as a white male space, I demonstrate how women of colour experience token fatigue through institutional and individual processes of diversity-driven tokenization and minimization. I illustrate how working in white male spaces requires additional labour, time, resources, and energy from women of colour. Ultimately, I call for the dismantling – rather than the diversification – of white male spaces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
