Abstract

The essay focuses on the relationship between the frame and still in Film Studies and film interpretation. The productive intertwining between surfaces and boundaries of the images is revised through a meta-theoretical lens: the essay addresses the way how the still can be and is a decisive instrument for film analysis. The author proposes a virtual dialogue with some of the most prominent researchers in Film Studies (namely, Giuliana Bruno, Paolo Bertetto, Laura Mulvey, Raymond Bellour, and others), going beyond the "borders of fiction". In this way, it explores some films where framing choices and other stylistic and visual decisions by the directors have a power of expression and, therefore, interpretation - such as La terra trema, The Leopard, Red Desert, The Consequences of Love.
