Abstract

The article presents information about the economic policies of Taiwan. With SARS likely to result in slower than expected GDP growth revenue inflows this year will be lower than previously thought. The disease will also result in increased government expenditure. There was some debate over just how much money should be set aside for the SARS relief package. Finding the funds to finance this package is not an easy task. As part of the its "Challenge 2008," the government hopes to raise R &D spending to 3% of GDP in six years time. To achieve this goal, officials are planning initiatives such as the establishment of a semiconductor design academy and the setting aside of capital to fund soft loans to R&D activities.
