Abstract: The article highlights the effect of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021 on the family of U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Javier Jaguar Gutierrez who was killed in Afghanistan on February 8, 2020. Topics discussed include the impact of the Taliban takeover on veterans, active-duty service and the families of military personnel who died in the country since 2001, tendency of Gutierrez to be reserved about his accomplishments in the military, and experiences of the family after the death.
