Abstract

A comparative study of the catalytic properties of Cu–Zn catalysts on supports of various compositions in methanol synthesis by hydrogenation of CO<subscript>2</subscript> has been performed. The commercial adsorbents: Al<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript>, Al<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript> with SiO<subscript>2</subscript> addition, SiO<subscript>2</subscript> with Al<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript> addition, and SiO<subscript>2</subscript> (all from Saint Gobain) were used as supports. All these catalysts were shown to be effective in the methanol synthesis. The highest methanol selectivity was observed for the sample with the Al<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript> support. In the temperature range of 170–210°C, the methanol selectivity for this catalyst was over 96%. The highest efficiency with respect to methanol, especially at temperatures above 210°C, was observed for the sample on the Al<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>3</subscript> support with SiO<subscript>2</subscript> addition.
