Abstract

[closo-B<subscript>10</subscript>H<subscript>8</subscript>-1,10-(COOH)<subscript>2</subscript>]<superscript>2−</superscript> was obtained in five steps and 40% overall yield from [closo-B<subscript>10</subscript>H<subscript>10</subscript>]<superscript>2−</superscript>. It can be converted to [closo-B<subscript>10</subscript>H<subscript>8</subscript>-1,10-(CO)<subscript>2</subscript>] and subsequently to carbonium ylides [closo-B<subscript>10</subscript>H<subscript>8</subscript>-1-COOH-10-(C(NRCH<subscript>2</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript>)]. The diacid, its derivatives, and di-ylide [closo-B<subscript>10</subscript>H<subscript>8</subscript>-1,10-(C(NHMe)<subscript>2</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript>] are characterized by spectroscopic and single crystal XRD methods augmented with DFT results.
