Abstract

This book is produced to a very high standard, in particular by the inclusion of 92 full-page plates, many of them in colour, showing original drawings and many examples of tile vaults, both under construction and in finished buildings. The architect Carl Sattler first used tile vaults in some projects in Italy before collaborating with the builder Max Rank to use tile vaults in a number of iconic buildings in Munich including the Landeszentralbank. Within such a broader scope, the opening chapter on hollow clay-pot vaults would make sense, but it does not sit well alongside a majority of papers on tile vaults, especially as it is at the beginning of the book.
