For Love or Money? Examining Reasons behind OSS Developers' Contributions.

Over the past decade, corporations such as Microsoft and IBM have become increasingly involved in open source software projects and development platforms. In this study, we examine motivations behind contributions in OSS platforms that have increasingly come under commercial influence. Empirical analysis of 2017 GitHub Open Source Survey data of over 5,500 randomly selected OSS developers indicated that carrots (tangible motivations) and rainbows (value-based factors) play their role.
