Abstract

The first section addresses conceptions of sleep, half-sleep and consciousness as depicted in English lyrics. In the second section, on English drama, the focus shifts from subjective experiences of sleep to sleep as an embodied form, and its relationship to political power. The liminal nature of half-sleep is also the theme of Margaret Simon's essay on Thomas Campion's poetry and verse. [Extracted from the article]
