Abstract

The article discuses American exceptionalism off the rails and why the U.S. spends so much but gets so little public transit. Topics include how rail projects have struggled to find investment despite government funding for highway projects; study by the Mineta Transportation Institute on the benefit of public transit to the community and additional spending for public transit; benefits of new rail construction that gives additional logistical advantages that keep costs down.
