Abstract
- Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of clomiphene citrate compared with clomiphene citrate and metformin combination used as infertility treatment in polycystic ovarian syndrome. Study Design: Randomized Controlled study. Setting: Combined Military Hospital, Nowshera, KPK. Period: March 2021 to November 2021. Material & Methods: One hundred and forty eight infertile patients aged between 20 to 34 years diagnosed with PCOS were enrolled for the investigation. Using blocked randomization technique, the participants were divided into two groups. Group A patients received clomiphene citrate 50 mg day on days 2 to 6 and dose was gradually increased to 150 mg day. Patients in Group B received metformin 500 mg three times a day along with the above mentioned dosage of clomiphene citrate. Collectively, the patients in both groups were provided with a follow up for six months. Efficacy in both groups was assessed on the basis of positive urine pregnancy test. Results: The rate of ovulation in group B was high in comparison to group A (39.2%vs 21.6%; P value = 0.02) the results were statistically significant. The rate of efficacy/conception in group B was significantly greater as compared to group A (32.4%vs 16.2%; P value = 0.02). Conclusion: We conclude that clomiphene citrate along with metformin, used in combination is significantly much efficacious as compared to clomiphene citrate alone for treating infertility in patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome.
