Abstract

A biography of poet and novelist Lucille Clifton is presented. Clifton was born in Depew, New York on June 27, 1936 to Samuel L. and Thelma Moore Sayles. She became the only poet ever to have two books chosen as finalists for the Pulitzer Prize in the same year in 1988. She worked as an actress and began her writing career after transferring to Fredonia State Teachers College in 1955. Her poems include "Good Times," "Blessing the Boats," and "Mercy."
