Abstract

A biography of novelist, short-story writer, poet, and essayist Alice Walker is presented. Walker was born in Eatonton, Georgia on February 9, 1944 to Willie Lee and Minnie Lou Grant Walker. She encountered a BB gun accident in childhood which left her blind in one eye at age eight. Her partial blindness allowed her to attend Spelman College in Atlanta on a scholarship for the handicapped. Her works include "The Third Life of Grange Copeland," Meridian," and "The Color Purple."
