Abstract

Landslides are a natural danger that occur frequently in steep terrain and cause severe damage. Comprehensive landslide rehabilitation and control, landslide assessment, and hazard zonation are necessary to avoid and minimize dangers. Different methods are developed based on various assessment procedures, which are divided into qualitative and quantitative approaches of Landslide Susceptibility Zonation. To identify the likely failure zones along the National Highway - 5, which is a connecting link between the townships of Chandigarh and Shimla, landslide vulnerability mapping was performed on the basis of a geographic system [GIS].Field visit were conducted to initiate landslide inventory map along with road network. Thematic maps of different landslide causative factors were developed. The research area was then delineated into five endangered zones: very low, below, modest, high, and extremely high". AUC method was adopted to validate the landslide vulnerability zonation map. A wide range of stakeholders will benefit from the LSZ map including town planners, engineers, geotechnical engineers, and geologists for development and construction in the study area.
