Abstract
- The article focuses on Jean Karotkin's Gymnopédies, an ongoing series of botanical portraits named after a trio of piano compositions by French composer Erik Satie. Topics include Karotkin's primary objective in the series which is to avoid sentimentality in favor of tonal interplay and to expose some of nature's more subversive personalities; and Karotkin's methods explore notions of beauty, including portraits of breast cancer survivors and the effects of Covid-related isolation.
