Abstract

FOCAL POINTS Public gardens are members of the communities outsidetheir gates--and those communities have needs that publicgardens are uniquely positioned to address. Involvementwith collaborative community outreach initiatives doesnot detract from long-standing garden programs; rather,it opens gardens up to new audiences and new ways toengage them. LEARN FROM THE COMMUNITY AND ITS ASSETS Building new relationships and opportunities forcommunity-based initiatives takes time and must center onthe existing assets and needs of a community.
