Abstract

It is likely that the quality of public schooling in Pakistan is a concern of parents, leading some of them to see private schooling as an alternative. The impact of parental characteristics on enrollment varies significantly by sex: a girl is much less likely to enroll in school if her mother is not schooled or if her father's occupation is agricultural. Some elements of the quality that parents care most are more likely to be present in private than in public schools: better physical facilities and more attentive teachers. The goal of this article is to assess the role of primary school access, type, and quality on parent's decision to enroll their children in primary school in rural Pakistan.
