Abstract
- The faunal material analyzed in this paper comes from the archaeological site of Uroi-Sigheti, Hunedoara County. The animal remains, belonging to the Bronze Age, phases II and III of the Wietenberg culture (WII and WIII), are of domestic origin, as indicated by traces of butchery and burning. The specific methodology used consisted of anatomical and taxonomic identifications, quantification by determining the number of fragments (NR) and the minimum number of individuals (MNI), estimation of slaughter age and sex, assessment of the meat quantity from each species and estimation of withers height. The WII sample comprises 103 faunal remains, from mammals and molluscs, while the WIII sample has 647 remains from mammals, molluscs, and fish. Pig (Sus domesticus) is the most common mammal as NR in the level WII, but in WIII the importance of this species decreases, and the skeletal fragments of cattle (Bos taurus) are predominant. The most hunted wild mammals were red deer (Cervus elaphus) and wild boar (Sus scrofa) in both levels of the Wietenberg culture at Uroi-Sigheti. Other activities through which a surplus of meat could be obtained were mollusk gathering in both phases of the settlement and probably fishing in WIII. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
