Abstract

A fluorescent probe (probe C) based on coumarin-thiourea conjugate was developed for selective detection of Hg<superscript>2+</superscript>. Addition of Hg<superscript>2+</superscript> to probe C induced obvious enhancement of the fluorescence intensity. Probe C exhibited good selectivity toward Hg<superscript>2+</superscript> and good anti-interference performance over other common competitive metal ions including Na<superscript>+</superscript>, K<superscript>+</superscript>, Ag<superscript>+</superscript>, Cu<superscript>2+</superscript>, Zn<superscript>2+</superscript>, Co<superscript>2+</superscript>, Ni<superscript>2+</superscript>, Mn<superscript>2+</superscript>, Mg<superscript>2+</superscript>, Fe<superscript>2+</superscript>, Fe<superscript>3+</superscript>, Ca<superscript>2+</superscript> and Al<superscript>3+</superscript>. The detection limit of probe C for Hg<superscript>2+</superscript> was calculated to be 0.44 nM. It was capable of detecting Hg<superscript>2+</superscript> ion in a wide pH range of 1.0–10.0.
