Abstract

Treatment of sickle cell disease by increasing oxygen affinity of hemoglobin. The departure of a second O SB 2 sb from Hb signals that local oxygen is becoming sparse, and as a result the Hb switches over to a state of lower oxygen affinity, anticipating future demands. Sickle hemoglobin oxygen affinity-shifting strategies have unequal cerebrovascular risks.
