Abstract

The hydrothermal preparation of active MnO<subscript>2</subscript> via KMnO<subscript>4</subscript> and MnSO<subscript>4</subscript>.H<subscript>2</subscript>O as inorganic forerunners is demonstrated, and it is evaluated as an adsorbent for the <superscript>99</superscript>Mo produced by <superscript>235</superscript>U fission. The structure and morphology of MnO<subscript>2</subscript> were distinguished using various methods such as FTIR spectrum, FESEM, EDX, XRD, TGA. The <superscript>99</superscript>Mo adsorption conduct on active manganese oxide was investigated, and the Mo uptake capacity was determined using static and dynamic techniques, and it was found to be 22.8 ± 1 and 6.72 ± 0.3 mg/g MnO<subscript>2</subscript>, respectively. This sorbent material was used in preliminary studies to prepare a <superscript>99</superscript>Mo/<superscript>99m</superscript>Tc generator. <superscript>99m</superscript>Tc eluted from the prepared generator was estimated to be 78–82 % with a low <superscript>99</superscript>Mo breakthrough (0.002 %) and acceptable radiochemical, radionuclidic, and chemical purities.
