Abstract

The anionic template method is an effective strategy for synthesizing high-nuclearity transition-lanthanide (3d–4f) heterometallic clusters. Herein, two lanthanide clusters with formulas [Gd<subscript>20</subscript>Ni<subscript>21</subscript>(μ<subscript>3</subscript>-OH)<subscript>21</subscript>(CO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>6</subscript>(IDA)<subscript>21</subscript>(C<subscript>2</subscript>H<subscript>4</subscript>NO<subscript>2</subscript>)<subscript>6</subscript>(C<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>4</subscript>)<subscript>3</subscript>(MoO<subscript>4</subscript>)<subscript>1.5</subscript>(μ<subscript>2</subscript>-OH)<subscript>1.5</subscript>(H<subscript>2</subscript>O)<subscript>9</subscript>]Cl<subscript>10.5</subscript>·79H<subscript>2</subscript>O (1) and [Tb<subscript>20</subscript>Ni<subscript>21</subscript>(μ<subscript>3</subscript>-OH)<subscript>21</subscript>(CO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>6</subscript>(IDA)<subscript>21</subscript>(C<subscript>2</subscript>H<subscript>4</subscript>NO<subscript>2</subscript>)<subscript>6</subscript>(C<subscript>2</subscript>O<subscript>4</subscript>)<subscript>3</subscript>(MoO<subscript>4</subscript>)(μ<subscript>2</subscript>-OH)<subscript>2</subscript>(H<subscript>2</subscript>O)<subscript>10</subscript>]Cl<subscript>11</subscript>·32H<subscript>2</subscript>O (2) were synthesized by introducing MoO<subscript>4</subscript><superscript>2−</superscript> anions as templates. Structural analysis indicates that compounds 1 and 2 are isomorphic, featuring a fascinating triangular-shaped metal framework. Magnetic property investigations illuminate the fact that compound 1 exhibits a large −ΔS<subscript>m</subscript> of 37.83 J kg<superscript>−1</superscript> K<superscript>−1</superscript> at 3 K for ΔH = 7 T. In particular, it is worth mentioning that compound 1 has an excellent low-field magnetic entropy (−ΔS<subscript>m</subscript> = 23.85 J kg<superscript>−1</superscript> K<superscript>−1</superscript> at 2 K, 2 T).
