Abstract

5G communications driven by Millimeter-Wave (mmW) technology, faces multiple challenges, the most important being the physical layer design. A comprehensive survey is carried out in this paper to understand the existing antenna design strategies and the performance is compared in terms of gain and efficiency. Antenna structures are combined to form antenna arrays, as it is difficult to meet the high gain, directive patterns, and bandwidth requirements of mmW technology using traditional single-antenna structures. Various antenna array structures such as linear array, collinear array and design modifications to existing array structures are proposed by researchers. Genuine effort is taken to analyse the performance of the existing array structures and a comparison is presented. Microstrip Franklin antenna array outperforms other proposed designs in terms of gain and bandwidth, and proves to be the most suitable candidate for 5G communications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
