Abstract

SPECIAL SECTIONS The heterogeneity of the American West has always been a given, but for many years popular culture only celebrated a thin slice through its complexities - cowboys and Indians, sheriffs and outlaws, barmaids and barroom brawls and, of course, the landscape. The museum's March exhibition, the Western Spirit Juried Art Show, features artists from around the world, both established and emerging, and breathes life into the stories of the modern American West. At the end of the year, exhibitions evolve for the museum's November show, the New Frontiers Juried Art Show and Sale, which of ers a glimpse into the cutting-edge contemporary Western artwork, from artists that break the mold of their respective mediums. The To Honor the Plains Nations exhibition in the American Indian Gallery displays Amereican Indian art dating from the early 19th century to post-reservation era, focusing on art of the Northern Plains people.
