Abstract
- The aim of the article is to review three Hellenic plant names of Semitic origin (βόρατον, βράθυ and βουρί) in the light of ancient language contacts in the eastern area of the Mediterranean world. These dendronyms, denoting different species of conifers from the Cupressaceae family (i.e. stinking juniper, Juniperus foetidissima Willd., savin juniper, Juniperus sabina L., Mediterranean cypress, Cupressus sempervirens L.) represent multiple borrowings, the ultimate source of which was the Proto-Semitic term *burāṯ-'juniper'.
