Abstract

Callender, Sanna and Cahalin (In this issue) describe mental health outcomes for those who have offended and have been given a mental health treatment requirement as part of a community sentence in England and Wales. In recognition that, wherever measured worldwide, mental disorder rates among prisoners are much higher than in the general population, two of the papers focus on prison reception screening. For many people with mental disorder who have been convicted of an offence and who are at the threshold of a custodial sentence, a community order may be safer for the individual, their immediate contacts and the wider community alike if that community sentence can be tailored to their needs.
