Abstract
- The entire crew of London arose in mutiny and compelled the ship's officers and marines to surrender. Hangman's ropes dangled from the spars of most of the ships, as a veiled threat both to the authorities as well as to any sailors seeking to take advantage of the mutiny. Their enemies were not the French nor the Spanish, but their former comrades: sailors taking part in one of the two great Royal Navy mutinies of 1797. Ship by ship, the mutineers took down the red flags symbolizing their rebellion and pledged to obey their officers. [Extracted from the article]
