Abstract

Marudai is a tool for making traditional braids, Kumihimo. It can produce braids of various cross-sectional shapes. Most of the braids are straight braids, but in a previous study, a circular braid was manufactured for the first time using a traditional technique called Marugenji-gumi. In this study, the same manufacturing method was applied to other Marudai techniques and the effectiveness of this method was verified. In addition, the factors affecting the radius of curvature were elucidated by comparing the structure of the braids produced from each technique. As the results of examining the unit mass, flexural rigidity, cross-sectional shape, and crimp curvature, it was found that there are two forces that promote and interfere with curvature, thus affecting the radius of curvature. This insight makes it possible to predict and design the presence or absence of curving, or a large or small radius of curvature, depending on the characteristics of each technique.
