Abstract
- A recent report from Kurashiki Central Hospital in Japan discusses a case of white embolus-induced basilar artery occlusion due to pulmonary vein invasion of a metastasis of a malignant melanoma. An 80-year-old woman experienced impaired consciousness after melanoma resection, and magnetic resonance angiography revealed basilar artery occlusion. Mechanical thrombectomy was performed to restore blood flow. Pathological analysis of the embolus showed it was derived from a metastasis of malignant melanoma, and chest computed tomography revealed multiple pulmonary metastases. This is the first reported case of cerebral embolism caused by pulmonary vein invasion of a metastasis of malignant melanoma. The research has been peer-reviewed and published in Internal Medicine.
