Abstract

A recent study conducted at Hamadan University of Medical Sciences in Iran focused on echinococcosis, a global infectious disease caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. The study examined the seroprevalence of human cystic echinococcosis (CE) in Nahavand, Hamadan, Western Iran, and identified risk factors associated with the disease. The study found that out of 400 subjects, 1.25% tested positive for CE IgG antibodies. The majority of positive cases were rural residents above the age of 50, with housewives and self-employed individuals having the highest antibody titers. The researchers concluded that although the frequency of hydatid cyst infection in Nahavand is lower than the national average, health programs are necessary to control this parasitic infection.
