Abstract
- New research conducted at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom focuses on Marek's disease virus (MDV) in poultry farming. MDV is a virus that infects chickens and other poultry, causing complex disease phenotypes such as paralysis, immunosuppression, and lymphoma. The study aimed to understand the mechanism of integration of the MDV genome into host telomeres, which is associated with the virus entering a latent state. The researchers used droplet digital PCR assays to quantify different regions of the MDV genome and found that the MDV genome is oriented with the unique short region internal to the unique long region. The study suggests that integration occurs through homology-directed recombination and excision via a telomere-loop-mediated process. [Extracted from the article]
