Abstract

Kratom, a drink extracted from a plant native to Southeast Asia, has gained popularity in the US as an alcohol alternative. However, it can have addictive, opioid-like properties and has been associated with fatal overdoses. While some states are trying to regulate kratom, there has been little federal regulatory action. The kratom lobbying group is advocating for limited regulations to keep it on the market, while some lawmakers are taking a more critical stance and have banned it altogether. The full effects of kratom are still unknown, and more research is needed to understand its risks and benefits. [Extracted from the article]
