Abstract

The article presents a case study of a 63-year-old man suffering from Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. She was seen elsewhere in 1962 with epistaxis and purpuric patches on her limbs, splenomegaly and a platelet count of 45,000 per cubic milimeter. A diagnosis of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura was made and treatment instituted with full doses of prednisolone for 6 months was given without benefit. Splenectomy was performed and the platelet count rose to 300,000 per cubic milimeter in 48 hours.
