Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the socio-economic and environmental effectiveness of rangeland restoration projects using Atriplex canescens plantation in Mallard county, Tehran province, Iran. The research methodology employed a descriptive-analytical approach, utilizing a questionnaire administered to 65 experts, 132 pastoralists, and 29 members of the local communities. The sample sizes were determined using Cochran's formula, and random selection was utilized. The validity of the questionnaire was assessed through expert consultation, and Cronbach's alpha coefficient was used to estimate reliability. Two-way analysis of variance, Friedman's test, and the Kruskal-Wallis test were employed for data analysis. The findings revealed that Atriplex canescens plantation had a significant social impact, while no significant effects were observed on the economic and environmental indicators. Consequently, the social index was determined to be the most important, followed by the environmental and economic indices. Experts highlighted that the economic, social, and environmental benefits of the plantation primarily manifested through increased livestock products, improved ranching conditions, enhanced motivation, and community participation in rangeland restoration activities, as well as the prevention of fine dust and soil erosion. Similarly, pastoralists identified increased livestock products, improved ranching conditions, heightened awareness about pastures, and prevention of land use changes and fine dust as the most significant economic, social, and environmental benefits of Atriplex canescens plantation. Local communities emphasized economic benefits in terms of improved employment and income, enhanced public health and hygiene, and increased vegetation and fodder production. Overall, the study demonstrated a convergence of opinions among all three groups, highlighting the effectiveness of Atriplex canescens plantation. This alignment of perspectives indicates the potential for successful project implementation, goal attainment, and ultimately, satisfaction among pastoralists and local communities. The positive economic and social outcomes of rangeland restoration projects contribute to sustainable development, facilitating the prosperity of local communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
